Poll suggests another Fernandez win in May
President Leonel Fernandez continues to widen his lead over his political opponents in the run up to May's elections.
According to a new poll commissioned by newspaper Diario Libre, support for Fernandez has risen by two per cent from a month ago, reports Bloomberg.
This takes the Dominican Liberation Party member to a 49 per cent approval rating, compared with his closest rival Miguel Vargas Maldonado, of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, who holds 37 per cent, found the survey conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner.
The presidential elections are set to take place on May 16th. The winning candidate is required to achieve a majority of 50 per cent plus one vote to secure the office, and if no members manage to achieve this, a second round vote will be held on June 30th.
Fernandez was elected to a second term of office (his first spanned 1996 and 2000) in May 2004. He achieved an absolute majority with the second highest percentage ever in Dominican history (57 per cent).
