Four days before the Dominican Republic's presidential election, Leonel Fernandez has won 55 per cent of votes in a new poll conducted by Asisa Research Group.
The incumbent president, a candidate for the Dominican Liberation Party, has been ahead of his closest rival in several recent opinion polls.
Miguel Vargas, the opposition candidate for the Dominican Revolutionary Party, would get 36 per cent of votes based on the latest survey of over 25,000 people.
President Fernandez, a 54-year-old lawyer, needs at least 50 per cent of the vote to secure a third term in office.
Eduardo Gamarra, a Latin American expert at Florida International University, told Reuters: "I think you can confidently say that he is going to win in the first round."
If none of the candidates wins a majority in the first round this Friday (May 16th), the two with the best results will take part in another round 45 days later.
"Either president that is elected in the coming DR elections will continue the great work Mr Fernandez has started by encouraging overseas investment. If Mr Fernandez is re-elected he will continue the good work he has started.
"The new potential presidents will be using areas such as overseas investment as part of their manifesto to attract support. Whichever president wins, foreign investment will be supported and encouraged," Will Jackson, Emerging Earth.
