Dominican Republic's call centres to create 30,000 jobs

The Dominican Republic's 57 call centres are expected to generate an additional 30,000 jobs in the next two years, director of the Exports and Investment Centre Eddy Martinez said yesterday.
Mr Martinez said that most of the data and information technology centres, which already employ 25,000 people, only began operations in the Caribbean country during the past three years.
Strong growth in the number of call centres is driving the need for more staff, who can expect an average starting salary of up to RD$22,000 (£331).
Mr Martinez recently said that government plans to promote the industry would benefit the Dominican economy "because we are not only speaking of creating more jobs, but better, higher paying jobs on average than those we have until now."
According to a CRS report for the US Congress, the Dominican Republic saw economic growth of six to eight per cent throughout the 1990s due to a growing tourism industry and the expansion of free trade zones.
