The first Annual Caribbean Tourism Summit, to be held on June 22nd, is expected to encourage ministers and interest groups to expand tourism and investment in the region.
According to Caribbean Net News, the event will provide a forum to discuss the economic future of the Caribbean.
"We have designed this conference as a way to engage influencers to help grow tourism and increase investment in the Caribbean region," said Hugh Riley, co-chief operating officer for the Caribbean Tourism Development Company.
The number of tourists to the Dominican Republic, one of the Caribbean's most popular destinations, increased by eight per cent in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same period last year, according to a new report from the country's ministry of tourism.
About 1.3 million people chose to holiday in the Caribbean nation between January and the end of March this year, with the most popular destination being Punta Cana on the east coast.
"Summits such this will help add additional increases to an already burgeoning tourist market. These increases will further underpin the need for future construction of touristic projects, such as Punta Perla Resort in Punta Cana.
"As the profiles of the participant nations continue to rise, there is no doubt that they shall continue to reap the benefits," Matt Legg, Emerging Earth.
