Dominican president Leonel Fernandez has won his third term in office with more than 53 per cent of the vote during last week's elections.
President Fernandez beat his chief rival social democrat Miguel Vargas, who attained about 41 per cent of votes, by a big enough margin to avoid a run-off election.
"I accept and recognise the results of the elections," Mr Vargas said in a speech.
President Fernandez, a former lawyer, won the election thanks to what many Dominicans view as his success in boosting the country's economy.
Many people in the Dominican Republic, of whom 5.7 million are eligible to vote, credit President Fernandez with stabilising the country's currency, tackling inflation and bringing economic stability to the Caribbean nation, with the help of almost £350 million in loans from the International Monetary Fund.
The 54-year-old president served his first term from 1996 to 2000 and was re-elected in 2004.
"We are delighted that President Fernandez has been re-elected given his commitment to investment in Tourism in the DR. During the first two months of 2008 there has been a 9.14% increase in travellers compared to the same period in 2007.
"Minister for tourism Jimenez says that this increase in travel has come about thanks to the government's increased spending on publicity, adding that during the last three years the average spending on tourism promotion was about US$23.3 million," Jane Althorpe, Emerging Earth.
