Candidates for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) have set off to begin a series of debates in various communities around the country ahead of regional elections next month.

About 899 people are running for positions as governors and there are 7,089 candidates for mayorships, according to the newspaper Prensa Latina.

Last week, the 5.7 million members of the PSUV had two days to nominate candidates online or in special areas in the capitals of Venezuela's 355 municipalities, venezuelanalysis.com reported.

Between May 18th and 30th the nominees will have an opportunity to express their opinions through a number of forums and panels that have been organised around the country.

Internal elections are to be held by the party on June 1st and official decisions on the winning candidates are expected to be made on June 5th.

Earlier this month, it was decided that if no candidate achieves a minimum of 51 per cent then the national executive will make a final decision.
