Products manufactured in the Dominican Republic have a "high aggregate value" and "high potential" in foreign markets, the Dominican Industries Association has said.

According to Circe Almanzar, vice president of the organisation, products that are locally made in the Caribbean nation, such as goods made using cacao, as well as beers, rums and chemicals used to prepare paints, are popular in the Dominican Republic's trading partner countries, Dominican Today reported.

The news provider also emphasised the important role that the industrial sector plays in the country's economy, accounting for almost 22 per cent of gross domestic product.

Forecasts from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) predicted that the Dominican Republic's economy will grow by about 7.5 per cent in 2008.

At the time of its 2006-2007 report on economic conditions in the region, ECLAC said that Latin American and Caribbean countries were "going through extremely favourable economic times".
