Portuguese prime minister Jose Socrates has said that his visit to Venezuela last week was a political and economic "success".

Mr Socrates concluded his three-day official trip to the Latin American country saying that trade between the two nations is set to increase, with Portuguese exports expected to rise "tenfold", according to the Portugal News Online.

The Portuguese prime minister said that the agreements signed by officials and business leaders from both countries will "open doors in a number of areas".

"We have firm accords for 130 million euros (£103 million) in the food area, 20 million euros in healthcare and we have contracts for ship repair," Mr Socrates said, according to the news provider.

He also said that there were letters of intent in the areas of civil construction, machinery and house building material which represented good outlooks for business between the two countries.

Earlier this week, the Miami Herald reported the Venezuela's economy had grown at between eight and ten per cent over the past four years – "a rate that most other Latin American countries can only envy".

"Good relations between Venezuela and Europe, in the form of Portugal, will add strength and confidence to the economy, for investment from big business brands.

"Strong inter-government relations between emerging countries and developed economies adds credibility to a new area for foreign investment in Isla Margarita," Will Jackson, Emerging Earth.
