The Dominican Republic's tourism minister has revealed plans for strengthening the country's tourism industry over the next four years, it has emerged.
According to Dominican Today, the Caribbean nation is set to receive more spending on infrastructure and the plan is also aimed at increasing the number of visitors.
Tourism minister Felix Jimenez said: "The plan we pursue is to turn Dominican Republic into an integral tourism destination."
Under the new plan, the country will receive additional investment for infrastructure in tourist areas and there will be an increase in advertising abroad.
According to the minister, the aim is for the Dominican Republic to see a rise in the number of international visitors to its shores, helping to generate more than five billion dollars each year for the economy.
It is also hoped that the increased tourism guarantee investments worth $8 billion (£4 billion) in real estate.
The ministry recently reported that during the first four months of 2008, the number of holidaymakers arriving in the Dominican Republic rose by 5.6 per cent.
"With the importance of the tourist industry in the Dominican economy, it is unsurprising that the Dominican government is actively seeking to further strengthen this sector.
"It is of particular benefit to the developers of touristic projects in the regions, such as Punta Cana, which are helping to attract the ever increasing numbers of tourists and investors," Matt Legg, Emerging Earth.
