Holidaymakers thinking about where to go this summer can make sure they make the most of their money in the Dominican Republic, it has emerged.

With a number of tour operators offering trips to the Caribbean destination for under $600 (£300) per person, tourists can choose from a variety of holidays to suit their needs, according to Dominican Today.

Once on the island, adventurous holidaymakers can take the Islabon Jungle River Tour or go for a scenic drive on the Carretera Touristica Route, the news provider has reported.

Another option is to take a cruise for several nights. Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic.com, says that those on a budget can find cruises from $60 a night per person for two people sharing a room.

The Dominican Republic is one of the most popular tourism destinations in the region according to the World Tourism Organisation, and the country received more than 1.5 million visitors by air in the first four months of this year, according to the Central Bank website.
