Fernandez elected at world food and climate change summit

President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez has been elected to the position of vice-president at the World Conference on Food Security, Challenges of Climatic Change and Bio-energy in Rome, it has emerged.
The Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (Grulac) presented Mr Fernandez as the vice-president to 33 of its member states in a meeting ahead of the upcoming Rome conference, according to Domincan Today.
Leonel Fernandez, a 54-year-old former lawyer, won his third term in office last month, fighting off his main rival Miguel Vargas.
Mr Fernandez won nearly 54 per cent of the vote, continuing on from his second term, to which he was elected in 2004.
Representatives from Grulac praised the Dominican Republic leader for his diplomacy in resolving a dispute between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela at the XX Rio Group Summit held from March 5th to 7th in Santo Domingo, the Caribbean nation's capital.
The leader of the Dominican Liberation Party was widely credited with helping boost the Dominican Republic's economy.
