The Dominican Republic is mulling over a bill which would create a new tourism institute, it has emerged.
According to Dominican Today, the National Tourism Development Institute may be established if the special commission which is currently studying the proposals agrees to it.
The initiative is being supported by tourism minister Felix Jimenez, who recently said that the aim is to attract a growing number of tourists to the Dominican's sandy shores.
Mr Jimenez said that he hopes the tourism industry will help the economy generate more than $5 billion (£2.5 billion) each year, as well as ploughing up to $8 billion of investment into the country's real estate, according to the news provider.
In 2006, the Dominican Republic snatched the title of the "Caribbean's Number One Destination" from Puerto Rico, which had held the honour from the World Tourism Organisation for the past forty years.
Almost 4.5 million visitors chose the Dominican Republic as their top holiday spot in 2006.
