Dominican 'one of the Caribbean's cheapest' holiday spots

The Dominican Republic competes with Mexico as offering one of the cheapest Caribbean holiday hotspots, it has been suggested.
Stephen Jermanok, writing for the Greater Houston Weekly, commented that within the popular destination, Punta Cana offers a rapidly expanding tourism scene.
Furthermore, the area is very beautiful, the reporter continued.
"The palm trees and powdery white sands here - soft as sifted flour - extend for miles, so it's easy to leave civilisation behind," he enthused.
Earlier this year, the Dominican Republic's ministry of tourism highlighted that there had been an eight per cent increase in the number of visitors to the country, compared to the first three months of 2007.
This meant that around 1.3 million people chose to spend their holiday time enjoying the republic.
Among such travellers, Punta Cana was the most popular destination, with the nearest airport receiving 44 per cent of non-resident arrivals during the quarter.
