Sports tourism aims to boost Dominican economy

The Dominican Republic is to be the host of the Continental Basketball Association Sports Summit this summer, which is aimed at developing sports tourism in the region, it has emerged.
According to Caribbeannetnews.com, the main theme of the meeting to be held in Santo Domingo from June 22nd to the 24th is "The New Economic Engine For Growth".
The summit is being organised by CBA Properties (CBAP) and Sports Perspective International (SPI) and it is hoped that the event will help make the Caribbean more popular as a sports tourism destination for tournaments, exhibitions and other events.
Ricardo Richardson, president and chief executive officer of CBAP, said: "While international expansion is a priority of the CBA and part of our strategic marketing plan, promoting sports tourism in the Caribbean will not only help the league, but also help to create a fan base in the islands and back here in the US."
This follows recent news that the Dominican Republic is considering creating a new tourism institute to help attract more visitors.
