Women based in Latin America and the Caribbean have been found to show the highest rated of "early stage entrepreneurial activity" of women in any region surveyed, a new study has reported.

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2007 Report on Women and Entrepreneurship has evaluated entrepreneurial activity in 41 countries across the globe.

According to the study, Latin American and Caribbean countries also have the highest level of participation by women in industry that is geared towards consumers.

The research noted that women's entrepreneurship is important to a country's economic growth, especially since a growing number of women are setting up their won businesses in countries across the globe.

"Female entrepreneurship is an increasingly salient part of the economic makeup of many countries and is a key contributor to economic growth…particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean," the reported concluded.

Earlier this year, the Latin Business Chronicle reported that global companies such as Ford and Nokia are continuing to see strong growth in Latin America even as the US economy is experiencing a downturn.
