Spanish businessmen to invest £2.9bn in Dominican tourism

A group of Spanish businesspeople are keen to make an investment of 3.7 billion euros (£2.9 billion) in the Dominican Republic's tourism sector, it has been revealed.
DominicanRepubliconline.net has reported that the president of the Caribbean nation, Leonel Fernandez, received confirmation from business representatives in Majorca of their plans to invest in the country's tourism industry over the coming four years.
Mr Fernandez was on a trip to Spain to meet with other businesspeople in Barcelona, according to the news provider.
He detailed his plans his further develop the Dominican Republic's transport network by building a new railway line between the two major cities of Santiago and Santo Domingo.
In the meetings with the potential investors, Mr Fernandez also discussed investment projects in energy, hotels and railways in his country.
The boost to the tourism industry comes after the Dominican Republic's tourism minister Felix Jimenez revealed plans to increase investment in infrastructure to attract more visitors to the nation.
