Dominican to invest $1bn in tourism

The Dominican Republic is planning to invest $1 billion (£500 million) in its tourism infrastructure over the next four years, it has been revealed.
Felix Jimenez, the Caribbean country's minister of tourism recently announced the planned investment during a lunch at Toronto's Manulife Centre, according to the Epoch Times.
Mr Jimenez explained that the money will be used to build a new cruise ship marina and a fast ferry service between Punta Cana on the east coast and Samana.
The number of holidaymakers heading to the Dominican Republic for their break has risen to 1.7 million during the first five months of this year, representing an increase of 22,037 from the same time period in 2007, according to the Sun Herald.
Commenting on the recent growth in tourism, Mr Jimenez said, according to the Epoch Times: "We are very pleased with this impressive growth in tourism and the new developments being planned will only improve our products as we continue to welcome record numbers of visitors from around the world."
