Dominican government planning 'mega-ports'
The construction of three mega-ports announced by the Dominican Republic's president Leonel Fernandez are among the government's priorities, according to public works minister Victor Diaz Rúa.
During an interview for the television program Hoy Mismo, Mr Rúa said the mega-ports construction will be funded with foreign investment, for which contacts are already studying international funding.
With the ability to create thousands of jobs in the region, the government is prepared to spend as much as $1.8 billion (RD$68.6 billion) on the ports, reports Dominican Today.
It is thought that more than 75 per cent of that could be allocated to the north-west port proposed for Manzanillo, with the two other ports being planned for San Pedro and Caucedo in the southeast which could be welcome news for those considering a Caribbean off plan investment.
In related news, it was recently reported that the Dominican Republic's new tourism chief Francisco Javier Garcia is to talk to the entire tourism industry about his plans for the future.
